The 2016 Mixtapes Vol.1 & Vol.2

Well, here is 2 mixtapes I made with my favourite tunes from 2016, actually very simple, not a big thing either. I have never been a big fan of David Bowie (he sure was a big personality, but there's plenty of them out there) he sure made a bunch of good songs, and some LP's as well (Station To Station, Young Americans, Low). But, I have never been a big anglophile, and his glam rock thing  is rather boring, and too theatrical in my ears, I prefer the american, african and carribean music. I loved Leonard Cohen as a pondering teenager, but the albums after Various Positions is not my cup of tea at all, sad for his family that he passed away (but don't we all have to go away in the end?). But, on the other side, how many people have lived such a great and rich life as Cohen (or Bowie or Prince)?

Something is very wrong in this world today, and it has been wrong for so long now, I don't understand people's needs of gods and worship in our time (I mean "gods" like Dylan, Springsteen, McCartney, Madonna, Prince, etc). I think it's awful. Maybe I'm just boring. So what. I think we all need real heroes instead of cartoon characters like those Bono's, Bowie's, Dylan's, Sting's and Springsteen's. The world is on fire out there, don't ever forget.

I want to thank you all who suported the blog so far, this will be the final post for this year. See you all in january (I hope). Cheers!

Rob Galbraith "Nashville Dirt" 1970

Nashville Dirt from 1970 is one of the coolest, grooviest and most funky country LP's ever made. There is hard to find any information about this dude on the net, but Rob Galbraith made a couple of album through the seventies, and produced some Ronnie Milsap and Sylvester  albums (the disco Sylvester?). This album is full of groovy country funk, some soulful tunes, and some with a jazzy hippie-vibe as well. Sadly this album is poor reissued, only available a short while on CD six years ago in Japan (surprise!). This is one of the strongest and most groovy albums in this genre. Dig it!

Volker Kriegel "Spectrum" 1971

The genius of Volker Kriegel is widely known, the german wonder kid and guitar player. This is his 2nd solo effort, the first LP he made while he was a member of the american vibraphonist Dave Pike's combo. The members is actually the personal as on the The Dave Pike Set 1969-1972, and the sound is VERY similar. Spectrum is just as groovy and psychedelic as the stuff he released with Pike, maybe the focus here is more on the guitars (some sitar work as well) than on the vibraphone? Sadly this album is rather hard to get (as most of the groovy MPS recordings) today, and the reissues (on both cd and vinyl) barely even exist outside of Japan (sursprise). Incredible groovy!

The Sound Express "Same" 1969

The Sound Express was a swedish who released this obscure jewel in 1969. There is only hammond (Ingemar Landén) and drums (Tillbjörn Perzon), there are some guitar work by Perzon as well. I guess the LP was a try to cash-in on the huge popularity of the duo Hansson & Karlsson. who were very big in Sweden 1967-1969. Actually this record is very great, it of course sounds in the vein of H&K, but sometimes greater I think, definitely more groovy, and not as "far out" and psychedelic in the vein of Bo Hansson & Jan Carlsson. This obscure album has finally got a legal reissue (CD only by Germany label Paisley Press). Groovy!

Akalé Wubé ‎"Sost" 2014

Akalé Wubé is a combo from Paris, who completely lost themselves in the Ethiopiques. Their music is in the swingin addis afrobeat vein with a nice vibe of the ethiopian jazz. The production is awesome, and groovy as ****! Support the band here.

Enjoy!

Konkoma "Same" 2012

Konkoma is a very groovy orchestra from London; their mix of afrofunk and afrobeat with vibes from the american blaxploitation era is a very enjoyable affair. This is their self titled debut from 2012, they are signed to the phenomenal reissue label Soundway, wich have given the world a highly acclaimed series of groovy compilation with 70s Ghana funk. The album is available on both cd and vinyl.

Dele Sosimi "You No Fit Touch Am In Dub" 2016

If you ever have wondered how old school afrobeat would have sounded with dub, here is the answer! You get the best of two worlds here. Dele Sosimi meets the maestro (and genius) Prince Fatty and Nostalgia 77. You get wonderful funky and hypnotic afrobeat with amazing dub effects. This must be the grooviest album of 2016 (released on both cd and vinyl)!

Tony Allen Plays With Afrika 70 ‎"Progress" 1977

Well, music doesn't get much more funky than this. Superb afrobeat by the legendary Tony Allen, just as great as any of  Fela Kuti's 70s stuff, maybe even better. This is Allen's 2nd solo effort. This is music as it's best. So,heal your soul! Groovy!

Enjoy!

Joe Henderson "Multiple" 1973

Here is the lovely Joe Henderson's 1973 album for Milestones Records - Multiple. A very groovy and funky soul-jazz set, a cross between heavenly free jazz and groovy rhythms. One if his higlights! Sadly the album not have any proper reissues, only a 25 year old crappy cd-edition from Original Jazz Classics with a lot of noise. Dig it!

Gato Barbieri ‎"Bolivia" 1973

This is in my opinion the argentine jazzmaestro Gato Barbieri's finest moment. Bolivia is a very groovy LP from 1973, released by the hip Flying Dutchman. He's unique style is a mix of soul-jazz  and free jazz with a vibe of cuban/afro groove. Dig it!

Ernest Ranglin "Boss Reggae" 1969

This is a marvelous instrumental reggae LP by the jamaican legend Ernest Renglin from 1969, a very groovy and cool album. Reggae was rather "new" as a "genre" back then, and off course you will hear the thin line between rocksteady and the new phenomenon reggae. This album has recently been reissued in proper editions (finally). Do the reggae!

Enjoy!
